Blog: Dutch Islands

The Netherlands has a huge variety of islands

We have the Wadden Islands on the Northern part of The Netherlands, the Zuidhollandse Island and the isles in the province of Zeeland on the South East of The Netherlands that borders Belgium. Furthermore we have loads of tiny islands in the area of the Loosdrechtse and Vinkeveense Plassen and the Biesbosch. All have their very own character and all are worth a visit when you visit The Netherlands.

You also might have heard of the Dutch Antilles that are officially called ‘The Dutch Caribbean’ (historically known as the Dutch West Indies). Current territories comprise the islands of ArubaCuraçaoSint MaartenBonaireSint Eustatius, and Saba. The contemporary term is sometimes also used for the Caribbean Netherlands, an entity since 2010 consisting of the three islands of Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba, which are special municipalities of The Netherlands. These tropical islands are something else and also definitely worth your visit when you are looking for a tropical holiday destination.

Back to the islands in The Netherlands. When you are planning to visit the country, either for business or pleasure, it is worth to go and see the island life. It is so different thanlcity and country life.

  • First of all, what is different is the pace. On the islands, everything seems to be more relaxed. It doesn’t matter which island you visit, it’s all just a little bit slower, making life easier and more tranquil.
  • Secondly, it’s the people. Islanders are very proud of their island and they treat it with respect. Often their entire family has lived on the island, and even though people might move for study or career reasons, almost all of them come back. Love for the islands is in their hearts which makes these people very special. Talk to them, ask them about their island and you will make friends easily.
  • Thirdly, the food. On all the islands, fresh local food plays an important role. Whilst the islands in Zeeland are known for their oysters and mussels, the island in the Waddenzee in the north are famous for their Zeekraal and cranberry’s, Cranberry’s are well-known for their proven health benefits, they prevent blather infection, heart and vain deceases and infections. On the Island of Texel you have to eat lamb in springtime. Probably the best you can taste in the entire country.
  • Last but not least, the views. The beaches are long and stretched and the views on the sea are amazing at all of the islands.

Do yourself a favor and give yourself a well-deserved break at one of the many Dutch Islands.
