The Netherlands Mission 2024 to China

The Netherlands and China share a deep-rooted history of trade, dating back 400 years to the first Dutch merchants arriving to China. Today, this relationship continues to thrive, with supply chain serving as a cornerstone of the €4 billion bilateral trade between the two nations. As the second-largest EU investor in China, the Netherlands recognizes the importance of this relationship, especially in the supply chain sector. Embodying Rotterdam’s motto ‘Make it happen’, a Dutch delegation including Rotterdam’s Vice Mayor Robert Simons, along with representatives from over 10 logistics organizations, embarked on a mission to Southern China in September 2024. The mission, taking place from 19 September to 27 September 2024, was organised by the Holland International Distribution Council (HIDC) and the Port of Rotterdam.

Exploring innovations in logistics and sustainability

The mission to Shanghai, Shenzhen and Guangzhou was centred on exploring innovations in supply chain and sustainability that are driving the industry toward ‘Industry 4.0’. Over the course of the mission, the Dutch delegation, including members of the Holland International Distribution Council (HIDC), delved into how Chinese ports and companies are embracing advanced technologies such as automation, artificial intelligence, and green initiatives.

The visit aligned with the mission of expanding the Dutch network in Southern China while fostering stronger ties between key Chinese logistics partners and Dutch businesses. The bilateral discussions revolved around implementing sustainable practices in the transportation and port operations sectors, areas where both China and the Netherlands are keen to lead.

Strengthening bilateral ties: Key meetings and seminars

The mission included a series of company visits in Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Guangzhou, where the delegation engaged with key logistics service providers, container terminals, sea ports, airports, and prominent shippers that export to Europe, such as JD.com and Huawei. These visits provided valuable insights into the latest advancements in automation and supply chain digitalization, with a particular focus on how companies are leveraging data and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to optimize their supply chain operations. The delegation was able to witness firsthand how these technologies are transforming logistics efficiency, improving decision-making, and driving sustainability across global supply chains.

During the mission, we held several seminars and networking events in Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Guangzhou, each attracting an average of 100 participants from the business and government sectors. These seminars focused on exploring cutting-edge logistics innovations, sustainability, and the future of Industry 4.0. Following the insightful presentations, networking lunches followed providing the Dutch delegation and Chinese companies attending the seminar with an opportunity to engage directly with each other and explore potential partnerships.

In Shenzhen, we also hosted a special Netherlands Logistics Forum as part of the China International Logistics Fair (CILF) during which members of the Dutch delegation spoke. After the forum, a networking reception at the Four Seasons Hotel offered further chances to foster connections with Chinese partners and strengthen bilateral relations.

China International Logistics and Supply Chain Fair (CILF)

The Dutch delegation also took part in the China International Logistics and Supply Chain Fair (CILF) held in Shenzhen. With over 250,000 visitors expected from around the world, the fair provided an unparalleled opportunity for Dutch companies to showcase their expertise and engage with global leaders in logistics and supply chains. The Netherlands position as a logistics hub was firmly in the spotlight as the delegation explored potential collaborations with Chinese shippers and exporters, focusing on port and shipping innovations that emphasize sustainability.

Looking ahead: A sustainable future

As the mission drew to a close, the Dutch delegation left with renewed insights into the opportunities for enhancing collaboration with China in the supply chain sector. With both countries placing an increasing emphasis on sustainability and innovation, the future of Sino-Dutch cooperation in this field looks bright.

The Dutch mission to China in 2024 is yet another testament to the strong, future-focused relationship between these two economic powerhouses, driven by a shared commitment to innovation, sustainability, and collaboration in logistics. As Vice Mayor Robert Simons aptly said: “Let’s make it happen together!”
